We own & operate a 9 acre granite quarry in Granabeg, Valleymount, Co. Wicklow.
Please view the quarry location.
In the 1990’s we extracted “dimensional blocks” of what is known in the industry as
“Wicklow White Granite” for the cut stone industry in Ireland but mainly for export, among which were to Pisani in England & John Fyffe in Scotland.
The term “Wicklow White Granite” arises from the dominance of pale grey quartz & a milky white feldspar grain with a slight alignment of dark mica which makes it paler than normal grey granites.
When cut & polished the colour is soft & pleasing hence the market demand.
Properties: Crushing strength: 944kgf/cm2. Weight: 2610kg/M3. Porosity: 0.24% wt.
The importation of cut & polished Chinese granite diminished demand.
The granite is suitable for cladding, monumental, paving & fireplaces but concentration is now on random rubble wall building stone (9M2 approx of wall per tonne), boulders & oblesiks & granite for crushing for the reconstituted stone industry.
Granite from our quarry has been used for centuries in famous Irish landmarks such as Dublin Castle, the GPO, the Four Courts, Trinity College, and the Ha’penny Bridge in Dublin and Powerscourt House in Wicklow.
The American Embassy, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4 has our reconstituted stone & cut stone on the perimeter wall.
John Fyfe (Granite) plc used our granite extensively & on the Aberdeen Bridge in Scotland.
